Domains

A domain from ZATS Market has no account, no email, and no name of yours on it. You pay with shielded ZEC from your account's Ironwood pool to ZATS's own shielded address. ZATS registers the domain, holds it for your account, and lets you edit its DNS in the app.

What you get with a domainCopy Anchor Link

A domain purchase gives you a name for one, two, or three years, and control of its DNS.

• The domain, registered at the registrar and held by ZATS for your account.
• Its DNS records. You edit them in the app to point the domain at a server, a site, or a mail host.
• No name of yours on the domain: the registrar lists its privacy service as the owner.

Who holds your domainCopy Anchor Link

ZATS holds the domain that you buy, for your account. You control its DNS records in the app, and ZATS keeps the domain itself.

• ZATS's operator, a service that ZATS runs, buys the domain with ZATS's own wallets.
• ZATS holds the domain in a wallet of its own, for your account. Your name and your addresses are nowhere on the domain.
• The registrar lists its privacy service as the owner.
• ZATS can move the domain to a wallet of your own on request. The app has no button for this, so ZATS moves it by hand.

ZATS also holds your payment for the minutes that the order takes. ZATS swaps it into the currency that the registrar takes and pays the registrar.

To buy a domain, you need:

• An account in ZATS Market, unlocked in this browser. See your account.
• Enough shielded ZEC in Ironwood for the domain and the network fee. To add ZEC, make a deposit.
• Your account's session with ZATS. It opens when you unlock, and it tells ZATS which domains belong to your account.

Ironwood is the shielded pool that your account pays from. The app sends one payment from Ironwood at a time, so an earlier payment must settle first.

The ZEC amount covers the registrar's price and the cost of the swap, with a buffer against price moves. ZATS keeps what the buffer does not use.

After you pay for a domainCopy Anchor Link

After you pay, the app opens the tracker: the panel that follows the purchase to its end. Each step shows what it waits for and how long it usually takes.

You can close the page. ZATS carries on, and the domain shows on the tracker when you open your account again. The tracker links your payment and ZATS's swap to explorers.

Point your domain with DNS recordsCopy Anchor Link

The tracker shows Your domain and its DNS records once the registrar registers the name. Until you add a record, the name shows the registrar's parking page. Your first record replaces it.

To add a DNS record:

1. Select Add a record.
2. Choose the record type.
3. Under Host, type @ for the domain itself, or a label such as www.
4. Under Value, type what the record points to.
5. Under TTL in seconds, type a number from 60 to 86,400. For example, 300 is five minutes.
6. Select Save.

A CNAME record cannot sit on the domain itself, so use a host such as www. To point the domain at a server that you bought, add an A record with the server's address. See servers.

To change a record, select Edit. To delete it, select Delete, then Yes, delete. You cannot change records that say Set by the registrar. A change reaches most resolvers within its time to live.

Every domain that you buy stays in the app, under your account. The app asks you to unlock the account first.

• My items lists the domains that your account bought, except failed and refunded purchases. On a phone, the tab is Items.
• Transactions lists every purchase with its status, refunds included. On a phone, the tab is Activity.

Each row opens the domain's tracker, with its DNS records. The tracker also lists the facts: domain, length, the registered-until date, price, ZEC paid, network fee, refund, and order. The app does not renew a domain. For the tracker and both lists, see paying and following a purchase.

If a domain purchase failsCopy Anchor Link

Payments are final once the registrar registers the name. If ZATS cannot register the name, ZATS sends the ZEC back to Ironwood, less the network fee.

The tracker gives the reason for a refund:

• The payment arrived short of the order.
• Someone took the name first.
• The price moved too far before the swap.
• The swap could not finish.
• The registrar refused the name.
